Greyhound is the fastest dog in the world. They belong to the breed of Sighthound. Speed and sight are considered as their most distinctive traits thats why they are also called gazehounds.
It is believed that the native place of Greyhounds is Egypt. Initially they were considered as Saluki, which is another breed of dog, but after research, it has been observed that they are far different from them and are close enough to herding dogs. Through a literature about Sighthounds, it is believed that greyhounds are descendants from them which then spread over the world. In 19th century, their breed started being registered in dog races in United Kingdom.
The weight of male greyhounds is about 27-40 kg while of females its about 27-34 kg. Their height is 28-30 inches in males and 27-28 inches in females. On the outside, their coat is fine and smooth and are in many colors like grey, blue, black, red, fawn etc. Their light, yet muscular body, long legs and a large heart make them a speedy animal. Their average speed is about 63 kilometers per hour. The average life span of Greyhounds is 10-15 years.
There is a misconception about this breed that they might be aggressive or unfriendly. But they are very friendly, calm and loyal dogs and are considered as good pets.
