Smallest Mammal In The World According To Size

There are two different mammals that come in this category. The first one of this category is the smallest mammal in the world regarding size which is Kitti’s hog-nosed bat and Bumblebee Bat is another common name of this animal. The binomial name of this mammal is “Craseonycteris thonglongyai” and it is considered as the smallest specie of bat. In length, this bat is 1.1-1.3 inches large while it weighs only 2 grams. These bats are reddish-brown or grey in color. They are normally found in limestone caves of Thailand and Burma. Bats live in groups, normally a flock of 100 bats live together in caves.

Smallest Mammal In The World According To Weight

The second type of smallest mammal in the world is the one which is smallest in terms of mass and weight. The species which lie in this category is Shrew who mostly resembles to moles. Being known for its weight, its average recorded weight lies between 1.2-2.7 grams and is the lightest animal in the world. Though this mammal is lighter than bumblebee bats, they are much longer in lenght. An average size of a shrew from head to tail ranges between 1.4 to 2.1 inches at most. Sharp and spike-like teeth are their most dominant feature. Apart from Australia, New Zealand and New Guinea these species are found in almost all parts of the world. Among the top 385 species of the shrew family, the smallest of shrews is Etruscan shrew. And they are considered as the fourth most successful family of mammals.
