The smallest bear in the world is Sun Bear. They are mainly found in Southeast Asia. Another name of this smallest bear is Honey Bear because they are fond of eating honey. In the bear family, they are considered as the smallest bear species. Their average size varies from 47-60 inches (1.2 to 1.4 meters) in males and it has been observed that the females are 10-14% smaller than the males. The weight of males is almost 30-70 kg while females are of 20-40 kg. They have sharp claws which are light in weight. Inward-turned feet of the Sun bears make them a good climber. They have a very long tongue of almost 3-7 inches, which helps them in extracting honey. The body of this specie of bears is black and brown color with golden yellow marks at random places.
Sun bears feed on variety of food including insects, birds, lizards, turtles, palm trees, roots and many more. According to the facts, there are almost 100 species of insects and 50 species of plants on which sun bears feed. They spend most of their time on tree or for finding food. Sun bears have great sense of smell, which helps them in finding the food. But they have a very poor sense of sight. The cub of sun bears is blind and hairless and for almost 18 months it completely depends on the mother. They are black in color and have a black and white on their chests. They have a very fluffy and soft skin that they can easily turn their head at all sides. These bears use to live in their nests and spend maximum of its daytime in sleeping and sunbathing. Sub bears are under threat from those people who use various parts of bears body for the medicinal uses. These bears are facing the threat of extinction because of these problems.
