Saint Bernard is considered as the heaviest dog in the world. They belong to the breed of Giant Dogs. There are no concrete set of standards to categorize dogs of this breed however, normally the dogs with large weight and height fall in this group. These dogs are descendant from Swiss mountain dogs, hunting dogs, farm dogs, search and rescue dogs and hunting dogs. Italy and Switzerland are considered as their native countries.
The name originated in 1707 after the Great St. Bernard Hospice. It was located in Italy/Switzerland where people use to come for living. Being the heaviest dogs, the weights of Saint Bernard can be anywhere between 64-120 kgs. The height of these dogs is almost 70-90 cm. Different dogs have different appearances regarding body colors. They are normally of red, orange, brown or golden colors with white. They also have some black patches on ears and eyes.
These dogs are famous because of their rescue traits and thats why a large number of this breed is used as working dogs in Europe. Saint Bernard is considered as a very social dog and a prominent traits regarding behavior are friendliness and loyalty. Weight-lifting, carting and sports are the most favorite activities of these dogs.
However, heavy dogs are in risk of developing canine obesity which leads to joint diseases like arthritis. It is because carrying excessive weight for a joint is hard work which causes them to become weaker even before a dog is properly aged. Although providing a good quality dog bed can soothe the pain of a dog with arthritis, but it is advisable to maintain a proper diet and keep the weight at a good level.
